What an AI operating partner is, and how the model works.

An AI operating partner finds the work worth automating in your business, installs AI systems in the tools you already use and runs them for a fixed monthly price, with the results reported in dollars. Here is how the model works, when it fits, what to ask before you sign, and what the same words mean in private equity.

The short answer

An AI operating partner is a provider that finds the work worth automating in a business, installs AI systems in the tools the team already uses, runs them as a service for a fixed monthly price and reports what they return in dollars. In private equity the same words describe a different job: an operator who works with the companies a fund owns.

The term is new enough to carry two meanings. This topic is part of the guide on how to choose an AI implementation partner. It sets out the model for owner-led companies, what changes once a system is live, when the model fits, and where the private equity meaning comes from.

The model in five parts.

An AI operating partner carries the whole route from the first question to the monthly result. Each part has an owner on your side too.

  1. Find.A diagnostic of your workflows and systems, then a readout of where AI could pay off, what to do first and what to leave alone.
  2. Install.Systems from a library of pre-built plays, set up in your inbox, CRM, ERP and documents, with a named person at every approval gate.
  3. Run.Daily operation, monitoring and updates as the models change, carried by the partner.
  4. Report.Revenue gained, costs reduced and hours saved, in dollars, against the baseline taken before launch.
  5. Price.A fixed fee you can read before you start, usually monthly, for running what is live.

What changes after launch.

Most ways of buying AI hand the system over at launch: the report is delivered, the code is handed over, the license goes live. The work that decides whether the system pays starts there. Exceptions have to be cleared, a model update changes an answer, a customer changes a form, and someone has to report the number each month.

An AI operating partner is paid to carry that work. The guide compares the six ways to get AI work done on what each one leaves you holding a year after launch, and the topic on what AI consulting costs prices the running cost most quotes leave out.

The private equity meaning.

In private equity, an operating partner is an experienced operator who works with a fund on the strategy and operations of the companies it owns. Private equity investors expect to add value to those companies, and a survey of 79 of them found more weight on growing them than on cutting their costs. An AI operating partner, in that world, is an operating partner who carries AI across a fund's portfolio. Search for the term and that is mostly what you will find.

The owner-led version keeps the idea and drops the fund. The company hires the partner directly, for defined outcomes, and the partner answers to the owner.

When the model fits, and when it does not.

It fits when four things are true.

  • A costly, frequent workflow. Quoting, inquiries, order entry, invoices or reporting, with a result someone can measure.
  • Systems you can open up. The work runs through an inbox, a CRM or an ERP the partner can be given access to.
  • An owner. One person owns the workflow and can approve at the gates.
  • No AI team to spare. Nobody inside has the time to build the system and keep it running, and hiring for it is not the plan.

It is the wrong fit when the work happens rarely or leaves no record in a system, or when you want your own engineers to own and maintain the code. Then building or buying software is the comparison to make, and the comparison page sets a partner against an in-house team. When no workflow is costly enough yet, waiting is a real option, and the guide lists it among the six options.

What to ask before you sign.

Six questions separate one AI operating partner from another.

  1. What is in your library? And what would you have to build new for us?
  2. Where does it run?Which of our systems you install into, and what access you need.
  3. Who approves each action?Where the gates are, and who on our side signs at each one.
  4. What do you report?Which numbers arrive each month, and who signs them.
  5. What does it cost? Each month, and what is included in that fee.
  6. What do we keep if we stop? The readout, the systems, the data and the records.

The AI Partner Scorecard takes these further: twenty questions to ask any consultant, agency, software vendor or partner, what a strong answer sounds like, and a sheet to score them side by side.

How StrikeArc runs the model.

StrikeArc is an AI operating partner for the mid-market, and it works in three steps. Diagnose & Recommend: StrikeArc Scout, the Intake & Diagnostic, is free, and a person walks you through the readout. Install & Run: plays from the StrikeArc PowerPlays Library are set up where your team already works, with a named human at every gate. Capture & Track ROI: results are reported in dollars, every figure signed by a person.

The subscription is $7,500 a month, including one play installed per quarter, plus run, optimization and ROI reporting on everything live. A one-time install is $20,000 per play, installed and handed over. If nothing in the library fits, Custom Discovery is $10,000. See the prices in full, or see how the path works.

Questions owners ask.

What is an AI operating partner?

A provider that finds the work worth automating, installs AI systems in the tools a company already uses, runs them for a fixed monthly fee and reports the results in dollars.

How is it different from an AI consultant?

A consultant usually delivers advice and a roadmap, and the build and the running sit with someone else. An operating partner installs the system and runs it after launch.

Is it the same as managed AI services?

Managed AI services are the running part. An operating partner also finds the work and installs the systems.

Is it the same as a private equity operating partner?

No. In private equity, an operating partner works with the companies a fund owns. An AI operating partner for an owner-led company is hired by the company itself, for defined outcomes.

What does an AI operating partner cost?

Each provider prices its own way. StrikeArc's library subscription is $7,500 a month with one play installed per quarter, and a one-time install is $20,000 per play.

What do we keep if we stop?

Ask every provider before you sign. At StrikeArc, the readout is yours to keep either way, and a one-time install is handed over to your team to operate.
